How Parents and Teachers Can Collaborate Using Our Dyslexia Resources

We Foster the Connections That Children Need for Reading Growth

A partnership between home and school is vital for your child’s academic success. You, as a parent, have a wealth of information about your child that their teacher can use in the classroom. Your child’s teacher observes things that might look different from what you’re seeing at home. When these two forces are aligned, children can get the best support possible and remarkable academic and behavioral growth can occur.

This is especially true for children with dyslexia. Dyslexia doesn’t always become clear to parents and teachers overnight. It may take time for both to understand how dyslexia is affecting a child.

A teacher may notice difficulties during reading and writing lessons over a period of time. Parents may notice more of the emotional signs of dyslexia. Your child may talk about how they hate reading at school or want to avoid it. They may even act out as a result of this challenge. You may also remember that your child was a late talker or had trouble learning new words before they even went to school.

Both teachers and parents hold a puzzle piece for helping a child overcome dyslexia. However, you or your child’s teacher must take action to bring this partnership to life. This includes discovering one additional piece of the puzzle: a well-researched, proven dyslexia reading program.

Follow the five steps below to find out how you, your child’s teacher, and the Dyslexia 101 Reading Instruction Program can form a collaborative team to help your child learn to read.

A 5-Step Collaborative Approach with Our Dyslexia Resources

Dyslexia therapies you may have encountered online often see themselves as the definitive answer for dyslexia. However, a collaborative approach is much more effective for a child’s wellbeing, self-esteem, and reading progress.

At no point do we want to undermine your perspective or your child’s teacher’s perspective. That’s why we work with parents and teachers to help them understand dyslexia and provide the reading instruction a child needs. Here are five collaborative steps to help your child overcome their dyslexia alongside their teacher and our Dyslexia 101 Reading Instruction program.

  1. Review our program: Sit with your child’s teacher and review information about our researched, evidence-based method for helping your child with dyslexia. Discuss whether you think this program would be a good fit for your child.
  2. Share results: Once you take our assessment and receive your child’s results, don’t hesitate to share this data with your child’s teacher. This will help your child receive IEP or 504 accommodations they might need in the classroom while they are also receiving virtual instruction from the Dyslexia 101 team.
  3. Keep communication open: As your sessions with our expert instructor progress, keep in touch with your child’s teacher to see if they’ve noticed progress in the classroom, as well. It is likely that the lessons your child learns during their Dyslexia 101 sessions will begin to make their way into your child’s performance at school.
  4. Connect us with your teacher: During your Dyslexia 101 sessions, you have unlimited email access to our instructors and one monthly virtual update session per month. If your child’s classroom teacher has questions, have them join your monthly update session or send their questions to you. You can also feel free to ask your child’s teacher to provide their perspective on your child’s progress. Our virtual instructors always welcome as much feedback as possible to make a difference for your child.
  5. Let school share in the success: Don’t be afraid to encourage your child’s teacher to privately ask your child about how their work is going. Getting instruction outside of school shouldn’t be a secret or a source of shame. Teachers should praise a child for making an extra effort outside of school with their reading or writing, just as they would if the child won their big game. Extra support and care from a teacher may make a world of difference in a child’s motivation to attend instructional sessions at home.
